Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is EDA?

Electronic Design Automation, or EDA, is a market segment consisting of software, hardware, and services with the collective goal of assisting in the definition, planning, design, implementation, verification, and subsequent manufacturing of semiconductor devices, or chips. Regarding the manufacturing of these devices, the primary providers of this service are semiconductor foundries, or fabs. These highly complex and costly facilities are either owned and operated by large, vertically integrated semiconductor companies or operated as independent, “pure-play” manufacturing service providers.

What EDA tools are available to universities? How much does it cost?

The University Software Program bundle is available upon request. Bundle types, quantity and pricing vary by region and are managed by Sales. Their configurations are updated once per year and provide a full Synopsys flow.

Please email univmkting@synopsys.com to learn more.

What software and/or programs are available to universities?
  • Synopsys University Software Program. Providing academic and research institutions with access to the EDA tools and technology needed to prepare highly skilled graduates ready to work in the world of Smart, Secure Everything. Membership in the program includes access to leading-edge EDA software, technical support, curriculum, and more.
  • Synopsys Optical Design Student Licensing Program. Gain access to CODE V, LightTools, and RSoft Photonic Device tools. This offer is available to students currently enrolled in a post-secondary degree program in North America, working toward a bachelor's, master's, or Ph.D.

  • ASIP Programmer. Software Development Kits (SDK) for Application – Specific Instruction-set Processors (ASIPs)
  • Simpleware. Software for 3D Image Visualization, Analysis and Model Generation
  • … and many more!
What resources are available to support use of the Synopsys tools at universities?

Synopsys provides the following support materials to help professors seamlessly integrate Synopsys tools into their courses. All information is available for download from Members Only, (requires SolvNet ID and password to access).

  • Synopsys Learning Center. A new training hub that offers a wide range of courses in different delivery modes and allows for easier navigation, as well as personalized learning experiences using your SolvNetPlus credentials.
  • Curriculum. Synopsys provides universities with access to comprehensive curricula for Bachelor and Master Programs in IC design and EDA development that include lectures, labs, homework, and exams.
  • Teaching Resources. Teaching resources such as generic libraries, PDKs, memory compiler are available to enable students to gain valuable experience using a complete design flow and to master advanced design methods such as low power and analog/mixed signal.
What is SolvNet?

SolvNetPlus is a repository of resources available for individuals to resolve many support issues, provide training, and educational materials. Only the two primary account holders can submit cases and download files. However, additional university affiliates now have access to a knowledgebase version of SolvNet, which unlocks documentation and a comprehensive, searchable knowledgebase that provides solutions to frequently encountered problems.

To learn more, email universitysolvnet@synopsys.com

Are university students, professors, or researchers eligible to access SolvNetPlus?

Yes. Only the two designated site contacts may access SolvNetPlus to download software, keys, and request technical support. However, current and/or enrolled university affiliates have access to an broadened version of SolvNet, which unlocks documentation and offers a comprehensive, searchable knowledgebase with solutions to frequently encountered problems. To add new accounts, either of the two primary contacts can send the list of emails to universitysolvnet@synopsys.com.
